A walks guide to the Sefton coast, starting from the house

You don't drive to the walking here: you step into it. The Trans Pennine Trail passes the park entrance, England's finest dune reserve starts a short stroll away, and twenty-one miles of the Sefton Coastal Path run past pinewoods, beaches and nature reserves, with a railway alongside to bring you home. Here are the best walks, from ten minutes on foot to a day out, and a boot room waiting for muddy boots and muddy paws.

Ainsdale Sand Dunes Nature Reserve

A National Nature Reserve on the doorstep: about eight miles of waymarked paths through pinewoods and some of England's finest sand dunes. Follow the trail beside Coastal Road to the railway arch and the Woodland Path, which is surfaced enough for pushchairs and wheelchairs.

Good to know: Listen for natterjack toads on spring evenings. Dogs under close control and out of the grazing areas and dune pools.

About 35 min to the beachSandhills Nature ReserveCafé stop in the village

Walk the trail north beside Coastal Road to Shore Road and out onto miles of flat sand, then come back through Ainsdale village. The Sands Lake Trail boardwalk in the Sandhills reserve suits anyone with limited mobility.

Good to know: Beach parking stops at the end of September. From May to September dogs stay 200 metres clear of the main beach entrance.

The coast-to-coast trail runs past the park entrance. Follow it east past the Woodvale lights and along Moor Lane and Plex Moss Lane (a quiet lane shared with traffic) to the old Cheshire Lines railway, about 1.3 miles and half an hour from the door, then walk out across the open mossland as far as you like.

Good to know: It is 215 miles to Hornsea if you keep going. Look for pink-footed geese over the fields in winter.

A classic: from Freshfield station, cross the golf course and follow the red-topped posts through the dunes to the beach. Make it a circuit by coming back on the Sefton Coastal Path, or walk all the way home through the reserve, about 3.4 miles.

Good to know: Take care at the level crossing, and on the golf course.

The National Trust's pinewoods are one of the red squirrel's last strongholds in England, with a string of short waymarked trails: the Squirrel Walk, the Asparagus Trail through the old asparagus fields, and the Lost Resort Trail from Lifeboat Road out to the beach.

Good to know: The car parks fill on sunny days and the Trust suggests the train to Freshfield or Formby. Free for National Trust members.

Southport seaside stroll

Sefton's easy loop from Lord Street takes in the verandahed shops, Marine Lake, King's Gardens and the Marine Way Bridge. The pier is closed while it is restored, with new steel going in this autumn.

Good to know: From May to September dogs are not allowed on the beach for about 550 metres south of the pier.

Two of Southport's great green spaces. Hesketh Park has lakes, a conservatory and an observatory, and a walk of about 2.3 km carries on to RSPB Marshside. The Botanic Gardens in Churchtown are free and open every day, with a lake, fernery and a village walk from the gate.

Good to know: Dogs on leads in the Botanic Gardens.

Surfaced paths lead to two hides, good for wheelchairs and pushchairs, with longer rough trails beyond. Avocets and lapwings in summer; in winter, pink-footed geese, wigeon and golden plover.

Good to know: The car park is locked outside opening hours, which are shorter in winter. Dogs on leads and not in the hides.

Crosby beach and Another Place

Antony Gormley's hundred iron figures stand along about three kilometres of beach, all gazing out to sea. The promenade is flat, surfaced and free of traffic, and Hall Road station puts you at the start.

Good to know: Stay near the promenade and never walk out beyond the nearest figures: the sand and mud are dangerous. No swimming.

A Lancashire Wildlife Trust wetland on the River Alt, with barn owls, marsh harriers and wading birds, plus the site of a Stone Age settlement. The paths are mostly unsurfaced and can be muddy.

Walk one way, ride back

The Sefton Coastal Path runs for 21 miles from Crossens, north of Southport, to Crosby, and the Merseyrail line follows it all the way: Southport, Birkdale, Hillside, Ainsdale, Freshfield, Formby, Hightown, Hall Road, Blundellsands and Crosby, and Waterloo. Walk a stretch, then catch the train back. Ainsdale station is a 20 minute walk from the house, or a quick bus, taxi or car journey.

Train one stop to Freshfield, then Fisherman's Path to the beach and home through the dune reserve's Woodland Path.

Make a weekend of it

A walking weekend at Warren House

  1. Friday evening. Arrive, then stretch your legs on the Woodland Path through the dune reserve (in spring, listen for natterjacks).
  2. Saturday. Train to Freshfield, Fisherman's Path to the beach, the pinewoods for squirrels, and back along the coast path. Hot tub, then dinner around the big table.
  3. Sunday. Southport: the seaside stroll, Hesketh Park and on to RSPB Marshside, or the Botanic Gardens and a café in Churchtown.

Muddy boots and muddy paws welcome

The boot room has hooks, baskets, a dog bed and a dog-wash sink, so the walk ends at the door, not in the hallway. Then it is the hot tub for tired legs and a table that seats twelve in comfort for the walk debrief.

Walking questions, answered

Can you walk from Warren House to the beach?

Yes. Ainsdale beach is about 35 minutes on foot along the trail beside Coastal Road, and the Ainsdale Sand Dunes National Nature Reserve starts about 17 minutes from the door.

Is the Trans Pennine Trail near Warren House?

It passes the park entrance on Coastal Road. Head east on it for about half an hour to reach the old Cheshire Lines railway path, or follow it north to Southport.

Where can we see red squirrels?

In the National Trust pinewoods at Formby, about 12 minutes' drive away, or one stop on the train from Ainsdale to Freshfield. Early mornings and quiet paths give the best chance.

Can we walk one way and get the train back?

Yes. The Merseyrail line runs right along the coast, with stations at Southport, Birkdale, Hillside, Ainsdale, Freshfield, Formby, Hightown, Hall Road, Blundellsands and Crosby, and Waterloo, so you can walk a stretch of the Sefton Coastal Path and ride back. Ainsdale station is a 20 minute walk from the house, or a quick bus, taxi or car journey.

Are the walks dog friendly?

Most are, with seasonal rules: some beach areas have summer dog restrictions, the nature reserves ask for dogs under close control and out of dune pools, and Martin Mere does not allow dogs. Warren House welcomes dogs, and the boot room has a dog-wash sink.

How many people can stay at Warren House?

Warren House sleeps up to fourteen across six bedrooms. House rule: maximum occupancy is 14 people in total, including children and infants.
