The coast collection
Warren House sits a stroll from the dunes at Ainsdale, with three more of the north-west's best beaches lined up along the coast road. Twenty-two miles of protected shoreline run past the door: resort sands to the north, National Trust wilderness and world-famous sculpture to the south. Pick a different one each day, and come home to the hot tub either way.

The local one, and the one you will use most: a vast, wide stretch of golden sand a stroll over the dunes from the house. Kite buggies and land yachts skim the flats, the designated bathing zone is lifeguarded in summer, and the dunes behind are a national nature reserve where natterjack toads sing on warm spring nights.
Morning dog runs, after-dinner sunsets, sandcastle mornings: this is the beach that turns a stay into a seaside holiday.

The classic resort beach, spreading out beneath Southport's historic iron pier. This is the one for a proper British seaside day: miles of sand, the funfair and amusements behind, Marine Lake alongside, and ice cream within reach at all times.
Pair it with Lord Street's verandahed shopping or an evening show, and the day sorts itself.

The wild one. High dunes tumble down to a huge, quiet beach, with National Trust pinewoods behind where red squirrels still dart between the trunks. The walk in through the dunes is half the pleasure, and dune-jumping has broken no spirit yet.
It is deservedly loved: on sunny weekends and school holidays, arrive early or pre-book the National Trust parking.

The unforgettable one. Antony Gormley's Another Place stands one hundred life-size iron figures along two miles of shore, all gazing out to sea as the tide swallows and reveals them. At sunset it is one of the most photographed sights in the north-west.
Drive down in half an hour, or take Merseyrail straight from Ainsdale. Check tide times, and admire the far-out figures from dry sand.
After the beach
Every good beach day ends the same way at Warren House: swimsuits over the rail, the hot tub bubbling among the silver birches, and the kettle or the wine on, depending on the hour.
Base camp for the coast
Sleeps up to fourteen across six bedrooms, with a secure garden for sandy dogs and tired children, a drying room's worth of utility space, and a table that seats twelve in comfort for the fish and chips debrief.

Ainsdale: a few minutes by car down Shore Road, or a walk over the dunes. In season you can park on the sand itself.
Ainsdale has year-round dog friendly stretches, Formby welcomes dogs across most of the National Trust land, and Crosby is a favourite dog-walking beach. Summer bathing zones have seasonal restrictions; signs on each beach mark them clearly.
Ainsdale's designated bathing area is lifeguarded in season and Southport has traditional resort swimming when the tide is in. The tide goes out a long way on this coast, so paddling expeditions are part of the fun; at Crosby, stay off the far sandbanks and mud.
Formby's National Trust pinewoods are one of England's last red squirrel strongholds. Go early or late in the day, walk quietly, and look up.
No. Ainsdale is walkable, and Southport and Crosby are both on the Merseyrail line from Ainsdale station, a 20 minute walk from the house or a quick bus, taxi or car journey. Formby is easiest by car.
