Warren House sits quietly in Ainsdale with the whole of the Southport area arranged around it. Nothing in this guide is more than about twenty minutes away, so the days take a gentler shape: a village morning, a garden afternoon, an unhurried lunch somewhere good, and home to your own grounds, kitchen and hot tub before the kettle has second thoughts.

Your home village for the week. A friendly crossroads of cafes, restaurants and everyday shops, with the station for days out and the great sweep of Ainsdale beach waiting over the dunes. The morning coffee run sorts itself.

The polished one. Birkdale village is a pretty Victorian parade of independent boutiques, delis, wine bars and some of the area's best small restaurants, all gas-lamp charm in the evening. Next door lie the famous links of Royal Birkdale and England's Golf Coast.

The leafy one. Formby village pairs a comfortable run of coffee shops and restaurants with one of England's last red squirrel strongholds: the National Trust pinewoods, where a quiet walk almost always earns a sighting. The dunes and beach are just beyond the trees.

The historic one. Churchtown was in the Domesday Book eight centuries before Southport existed, and it shows beautifully: whitewashed thatched cottages, the old church of St Cuthbert, a proper village pub, and the Botanic Gardens on its edge. Made for a slow afternoon.
The grand boulevard
Southport's mile-long, tree-lined boulevard of glass verandahs and Victorian facades rewards a slow wander. Two stops anchor the day: The Atkinson, the town's arts centre, with free galleries, a museum, theatre and concert programme and a good cafe; and Southport Market, the restored Victorian market hall nearby, now a lively food and drink hall of independent kitchens around shared tables. Gallery in the morning, market for lunch, verandah shopping in between.
Green and pleasant
About 15 minOpened 1874
A much-loved Victorian park wrapped around a serpentine lake: a fernery, aviaries, rose beds, a cafe by the water and ducks with strong opinions. Combine it with Churchtown village next door and the afternoon is spoken for.
About 13 minVictorian glasshouse
Southport's grand town park at the north end of Lord Street: a lake with its fountain, a restored conservatory, floral displays that change with the seasons and winding paths under mature trees. Lovely before or after a Lord Street morning.
Under your own steam
The coast here is made for the unhurried: big-sky beach walks, pinewood trails and the flat, easy miles of the Trans Pennine Trail and National Cycle Route 62 passing close to the house. We have full guides to both.
Back at base
Days like these end best around one table. Warren House seats twelve in comfort for dinner, sleeps up to fourteen in six beautiful bedrooms, and keeps the evening going in the bar or the hot tub for exactly as long as you like.

Southport's arts centre on Lord Street: free galleries and a museum, plus a theatre and concert programme, cafe and shop. About ten minutes from the house.
The Victorian market hall has been reborn as a food and drink hall: a handful of independent kitchens, a central bar and shared tables. Relaxed, good value and a few minutes from Lord Street.
Birkdale village punches well above its size for restaurants and wine bars, seven minutes away. Ainsdale has friendly local options a stroll from the house, and the house's own private chef service covers the nights you would rather not move.
Yes, both the Botanic Gardens at Churchtown and Hesketh Park are free public parks, with cafes for the essential mid-wander pot of tea.
Ainsdale village and beach are walkable from the house, and Merseyrail from Ainsdale station (a 20 minute walk from the house, or a quick bus, taxi or car journey) connects Birkdale and Southport town centre. For Churchtown, the gardens and Formby, a car or taxi is easiest.
